What to expect from your engagement session

So here we are, getting ready for your engagement session. Nerves might be high, excitement even higher, and thoughts of “I’m so awkward in front of the camera” might be creeping into your head. But rest assured, it’s going to be tons of fun and the more I can prepare you in advance the better you’ll feel (so basically, it’s all on me).

The first most important thing that will help get us the best possible photos is your connection to each other. Make sure to come well rested, caffeinated, and bring a snack if you know you get hangry. Your ability to focus entirely on each other will help bring out the emotion and beauty of your love, and will help me get all of those “Oh my God these are so good!” photos.

Since we’ve probably never spent any real amount of time together I’ll start everything off nice and slow then add in the fun once we’re totally comfortable with each other. I usually start by putting you into a casual pose then work my way closer from there. This gives us all a chance to work off the nerves and for me to look around for awesome shots.

Once the ball is really rolling I’ll give you lots of guidance and I’ll move far away then really close then far away again. I’ll have you spin each other around, melt into a quiet moment, or smooch over, and over, and over again. It all depends on who you two are together. The key for you is to move a lot and to be connected to each other at all times (both physically and emotionally). Tuck her hair behind her ear, wrap yourself around him as he hugs you, kiss everything between your partners shoulder to their ear, whatever you can do to make each pose your own is okay by me.

A few last details...

• What do we do? Where do we go?

Choosing a location or an activity for your shoot doesn't have to be brain surgery. We can include an activity you love doing together, a location that's meaningful, an adventure you've been dying to go on, or we can keep it easy and just pick an awesome spot and put all of our attention on you guys being cute together.

• What do we wear?

I like to suggest that you wear clothing that suits our location or theme, and that you feel like YOU in. I tend to make you move around a lot (and sometimes climb rocks) so clothing that allows for movement is great. It's good to avoid big logos, super bright colours (pure red photographs horribly) and loud patterns. It's also a good idea to coordinate with each other with your look and colours. You don't want one person in bright green sweatpants and one person in a ball gown, so make sure to check in with each other. And feel free to bring more than one outfit, just incase.

• What if I feel like a weirdo!

It's okay to start off feeling weird! Weird is good and leads to laughter which leads to awesome photos. If it makes you feel any better I always feel awkward for the first 20 minutes or so anyways. You'll be totally comfortable by the end, I promise.

• What do I do with my hands?

When you're doing something that looks amazing I'll probably make you do it again and again to make sure I got it just that way I want the photo to look. Apologies in advance. It'll happen. But it will be worth it.

• She's not talking, why isn't she talking?

If I'm not telling you what to do for a minute I'm probably just loving what you're doing so much that I don't want to interrupt your flow. That, or I'm fiddling with my settings or planning a creative shot. Either way, my silence is a good thing so don't feel like you're doing anything wrong.

• We're having... weather. What now?

If the weather isn't on our side we have a few options. We can stick to our guns, wear layers, bring umbrellas, find undercover locations and still have fun, or we can try to reschedule. I generally like to make this decision with you depending on how adventurous you're feeling.

Need Inspiration? I got you.

Any questions? Holler!

I'm here to answer any other questions you might have. I'm so excited to photograph you and make some awesome photos that capture the two of you together.
